One of the things you have to thing about for making great images with a camera is lighting. Digital photography captures light in many of the same ways that a film camera does, only it uses pixels of light as opposed to making impressions on chemicals. Lighting in digital photography can get just as expensive as with traditional photography, so you need to think carefully. First, choose what sort of photographs you take. If you want to go professional, you need professional lighting digital photography equipment, too.

Reflective Metering

In measuring lighting, digital photography relies on the reflective metering way of grabbing and recording light. Light usually has to be bounced off of the subject for your digital camera to pick it up and then bounce off of mirrors inside the camera. This is why in digital photography, professionals and amateurs alike usually resort to using a light meter. This can throw light onto the subject.

Before you use light meters or flashes with your digital camera, you need to turn off the automatic mode and set it to manual. If you don’t have a manual setting on your camera, guess what? You’re out of luck and need a new camera.

Light Meters

Most digital cameras will already have a built-in light meter. Still, this might not be enough. You can tell when you look through the eyepiece. One good thing about lighting in digital photography is that what you see through your camera’s eyepiece is the exact same picture your camera will make. You often have to just cross your fingers and pray with film cameras.

Light meters are NOT flashes. Those are different pieces of equipment. Light meters record the amount of light reflecting off of your subject. This also sets off all of the flashes in the area. Yes, kids – don’t do this at home. Not unless your parents are filthy rich. A light meter is a very high-tech recording gizmo that looks like a cell phone. It tells you when to press the shutter.

You need to use that because your built-in light meter can’t handle a flash. So, it thinks that there’s a huge blinding light and will not let you take a picture. You need to set the light meter and the camera to the same shutter speed, ISO setting and aperture value. This puts them in sync.

Or, you could do what I do and chuck out digital photography altogether and stick with film cameras. It a lot easier, IF you’re not a professional photographer.

Skeptics think that photography is just a case of luck when taking pictures. While this can happen, there are also many individuals who can transform their shots into masterpieces just by considering the many factors that make a picture awe inspiring. Others think that it is not at all in how good your camera is but in the talent of the photographer.

Factors In Photography

When taking pictures, there are many things that you need to consider so that the pictures turn out well. Experts would like to say that the light is one of the more important things that have to be considered when taking pictures. Among the things that are important factors to photography, is light.

Actually, the light or the absence of can be made into art in photography if you are creative enough. You can still take pictures in dim light if you want to by adjusting the speed of your camera to gather up as much light as possible while taking the picture. This is how some pictures turn out to be works of art because the lights depicted in the scene are sort of moving. So light, or the absence of it, is an important factor to photography. It is up to the person taking pictures just how creative he can get using the light and its absence.

Another important factor to photography is the framing of the shot. Some scenes look so great in person but turn out not as awesome in pictures. The reason for this is that what we see through our eyes is not limited by the frame of the picture but the picture is. In photography, the person taking the pictures needs to consider the fact that the pictures are cut to a certain size and when they take pictures, what is in the frame in the viewfinder is what you get. You might find it useful to bring a small frame with you when taking professional pictures, especially of landscapes or nature since these are usually large scale.

The subject is also another aspect in photography that needs to be considered. You need to adjust your shot with the subject in mind. Smaller subjects may need to be focused more or zoomed in more to bring out what has attracted you to it in the first place. Finding out what has attracted you to the scene is one of the things that you need to put in the shot in order for viewers to understand why you find the scene or shot attractive.

Photography can be tricky in the sense that the combination of the person taking pictures and the camera and the scene needs to work in order for the photograph to work and be understood.

Since 1888 when George Eastman advertised his new camera was so simple that all the user had to do was push the button, photography landed in the hands of the general public. His development of roll film and the Kodak camera and contrary to many beliefs, the word Kodak was made up by Eastman, based only on his feeling that the letter ‘K’ was a strong letter and he wanted a word that started and ended with one. It was not long until his confidence in advertising saw the familiar word Kodak in red on a yellow background.

Since the earliest days of glass plates with wet emulsions through the growth of roll films and today’s digital photography it has enabled virtually everyone the opportunity to take pictures to create their own personal record of their life as well as that of their family and friends. It is one of the most popular hobbies in the world and several have established businesses based on the need for professional photography.

When instant film and cameras entered the scene, it brought new people into the hobby of photography, all anxious to be able to see their pictures almost immediately, a need currently filled by the use of digital photography. Just as there are many forms of art, it is also used as an expression of individual views as well as an art form.

Keeping Visual Records Keeps History Alive

For many people it is difficult to understand much from early history as the only representations of the important event of the day, may only be drawings on the walls of caves. Through the use of photography visual records can be made and maintained for descendants to have a better understanding of the happenings of today. Through photojournalism and even amateur photography, not much goes on in today’s world that is not forever captured in an image.

Professional, wildlife and even portrait photography is a part of today’s mainstream with cameras made so small they can be hidden in a button on a shirt. Motion picture photography is also turning the average person into home moviemakers, offering a life-like look at their lives and daily activities.

Some of the earliest photography clubs taught people the basic elements of the hobby as well as how processing of the film was accomplished to turn the film into a negative and back to a positive representation of the captured image. Working in color at reasonable prices also made photography much more popular among a wider range of enthusiasts.
