Choosing An Online Digital Photography Forum

Published by Author at 3:06 pm under Digital Photography

Sometimes when you’re learning a new skill like digital photography, you have a ton of questions that the instruction manual just can’t answer.  You could invest in a digital photography book, but even that might not be enough.  Getting advice, hints, suggestions and interaction with others who share your fascinations and frustrations make joining and online digital photography forum a must.

Where To Look

It’s much easier to find online digital photography forums than it is to choose which one is for you.  It can be a bit of a trial and error to discover what online community you best fit into.  However, you first need to find the forums in order to check them out.  You can find them from the websites of camera manufactures, from online image hosting sites like Flikr and from entering “digital photography forum” in your favorite search engine.

What To Look For

When you find a prospective digital photography forum, you want to check it out before committing your time and energy to it.  First of all, is it a free forum?  It should be.  Secondly, when was the last time anyone posted to the forum?  If there hasn’t been much activity in the last couple of weeks, then perhaps it’s a dead forum where people just don’t go to anymore.  You need a forum that’s visited every day, ideally.

Some online digital photography forums require you to register before you can even read any of the posts, but this is getting rarer.  Just by reading the posts, you can get a feel for the kinds of people that the forum community is made up of.  Do they actually talk about digital photography, or do they just gossip?  Do they use a lot of swear words?  Are there a lot of flame wars?  Although all forums will have clashes of personality, several long flame wars on a forum is not a sign of a harmonious community.

When You Join

Sometimes, it’s easier to just register with an online digital photography forum and lurk a while to see what the forum is like.  If you don’t like it, you can always leave and choose another.  Be sure to read the FAQ page to see what the protocol and netiquette for that particular forum is like.

And then just type in a few questions, read other threads to get some hints and suggestions on ways you can get the most out of your camera to get exciting new images and relax.  Although sometimes frustrating and other times dull, most of the time an online forum is a great way to get help and laughs.  In time, you might want to stick with the forum to answer questions from digital photography newbies.
